Explanation of State and District Test Scores

The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test® (FCAT) is part of Florida’s overall plan to increase student achievement by implementing higher standards. The FCAT, administered to students in grades 3-11, consists of tests that measure selected benchmarks in mathematics, reading, science, and writing from the Sunshine State Standards (SSS). Participating students include all students working toward a standard high school diploma, including English Language Learners (ELLs) and students with disabilities. Grade 3 students must earn an FCAT Reading score of Level 2 or higher on a scale of 1 – 5 in order to be promoted to grade 4. Requirements of FCAT scores for passing to the next grade level may be found in the district’s Pupil Progression Plan.

The best understanding of a student’s academic achievement comes from looking at multiple pieces of evidence (including FCAT scores) collected over time. Developmental Scale Scores were introduced in 2002 to track student progress over time and across grade levels to indicate student “growth,” or “learning gains.” For this reason, they are the scores students and parents receive on their FCAT Reading and FCAT Mathematics Student and Parent Reports. By using FCAT Developmental Scale Scores, parents can monitor their student’s academic progress from one grade to the next. By comparing a student’s scores in the same FCAT subject for two or more years with the associated mean scores (or with the various Achievement Levels) for those years, it is possible to identify whether a student’s performance improved, declined, or remained consistent.

Parent Resource Center (PRC)

The Parent Resource Center is a lending library for Boswell Elementary parents to provide them with resources and materials to use at home to enhance the skills of their children. There are games, books, flash-cards, puzzles, videos, and cassette tapes. We also have handouts of activities parents can do at home to target reading, math, writing, spelling, phonics, vocabulary, and other skills necessary for their student's academic success.

The P.R.C. also has books for check-out about parenting issues such as "Our Special Child", "Secrets of Effective Fathers", "Single Parenting", and "Making Children Mind Without Losing Yours." The Parent Resource Center is open most school days from 8:30 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. Please check the school calendar for days and times of special evening hours. There are many educational and fun activities offered for parents and their children in the Parent Resource Center.

Please stop by and "Check-Out" what we have. If you have any questions or suggestions, please call the Parent Resource Center at 499-2990.

Become involved in the following areas:

The School Advisory Council (SAC) meets four times a year. The role of the SAC is to develop, monitor, and evaluate the functions of the school. Members are asked to review the School Improvement Plan that is written annually and submitted to the School Board. Please contact the Principal to become a member.

The Parent / Teacher Organization (PTO) is open to all parents and teachers. The PTO meets regularly to coordinate programs for our families, students, and staff. It organizes fund raising activities to generate funds for school needs that the general operating budget cannot accommodate. Membership is open at the beginning of the year.

Our Volunteer & Business Partner Program consists of parents, relatives, friends, and business partners who are willing to invest their time, talents and/or resources. We have a variety of opportunities available. Please contact the Volunteer Coordinator to see how you can be involved. Boswell’s volunteer program has been awarded the Golden School Award.

It is the policy of the Polk County School Board that any parent or volunteer working in the classroom or participating on a field trip must be an approved volunteer. An application for this can be obtained from the school office.
