WE ARE A
TITLE ONE SCHOOL

Title One
is the largest federally funded educational program in our nation. We qualify for these funds, along with approximately 60 other schools in our county, because of our high low-economical status. These funds are used to add highly qualified staff, reduce the number of students per class, support parent and community involvement, improve staff development, and purchase additional instructional materials and supplies. It also provides ongoing assessments to track progress and ensure there will be No Child Left Behind.

WE ARE A
“READING FIRST” SCHOOL

Reading First
is a focused nationwide effort to enable all students to become successful early readers. As a new, high-quality evidence-based reading program, it was adopted by President George W. Bush when he signed into law the No Child Left Behind Act. The program is instrumental in providing comprehensive reading instruction in Kindergarten through Grade 3. Specific strategies are used to promote decoding, fluency, and comprehension. It ensures accountability through ongoing, valid and reliable screening, diagnostic, and classroom-based assessment.
Kagan Cooperative Learning structures are used in our classrooms to enhance learning. They provide positive interdependence, individual accountability, equal participation, and simultaneous interaction. Unlike group work, they allow students to work together to reinforce curriculum knowledge and develop social behaviors.

Love & Logic strategies are used by teachers to allow students to grow through their mistakes. They provide opportunities for students to build healthy self-concept and promote classroom management.

Thinking Maps are used to assist students in organizing their thinking processes. A sample of these structures has been included. It has been developed by the Innovative Learning Group.
